Press Release: The unveiling of Queanbeyan’s first adult change table

Please come along to the unveiling of Queanbeyan’s first adult change table

When: Wednesday 28 November 2018 at 11.30am

Where : Q-One Aquatics Queanbeyan, Cnr Crawford Campbell and Antill Streets, Queanbeyan

The region’s first adult change table will be unveiled next Wednesday, at the Queanbeyan Aquatic Centre, to enable people with disability to participate in aquatic activities.

Up until now, local community members with high support needs have not been able to access the pool. Di Grandjean, mother of 19 year old James says “James has not been able to attend our local pool since 2003 because of the lack of appropriate change facilities for his needs. The adult change table means James is now able to return to his love of swimming and water because he can be changed in a safe and dignified manner.”

The installation of the height adjustable adult change table will complement the existing pool hoist and amphibious wheelchair in the wet play area. This will provide James and other community members the opportunity to enjoy quality participation in water play activities.

“Council’s Disability Inclusion Action Plan (DIAP), adopted last year, highlighted the need for an adult change table, to help create an inclusive, liveable community. The DIAP aims to give people with disabilities greater access to Council information, services and facilities,” Terry Campese, QPRC Program Coordinator- Community said.

“This adult change table was made possible through a successful NSW ClubGRANTS application submitted by Tim O’Hare of AbilitySeer who is an active member of the newly formed QPRC Access Committee. As a community, it is so satisfying to see what a difference we can make together.”

Since the NSW ClubGRANTS began, clubs have given more than $1 billion to recipients. ClubGRANTS funding is available across NSW and is made possible through the support of NSW clubs, local councils and the NSW Government. Approximately 500 clubs voluntarily allocate funds to the ClubGRANTS scheme.
