How to Access Short-Term Accommodation and Respite

Accessing STA and respite care involves working with your NDIS planner or support coordinator to identify the need for these services and include them in your NDIS plan. Once approved, participants and their families can choose from various STA providers who offer suitable accommodations and support services tailored to their needs.

What is included?

1:1 Support

All the respite packages comes with provision of 1:1 support throughout the respite period.

Private Accommodation

You will get access to private accommodation in your desired respite location.

Meals and Activities

Your respite package will cover all the main meals of the day throughout the respite period.

Transportation

All the transportation during the respite period is covered under the program. * T&C Apply

*Additional transportation fees may occur if the location of the respite is outside Canberra.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • General bookings are for participants aged 18 years and older.
  • All participants must be a minimum of 15 years of age or older.
  • Specialised bookings for participants aged 15 to 17 years will be offered throughout the year.
  • COMPLETE A REFERRAL FORM – You, your family member or your support coordinator can complete our referral form available in our website. 
  • WE WILL REVIEW – Our staff will then review your information to confirm your suitability for participation on this respite experience. The island is remote and has many varied terrains that will potentially limit a person’s ability to participate. Your safety and our staffs safety are paramount and we will do our best to ensure that successful applicants achieve their goals and have a great experience.
  • WE WILL PROVIDE A QUOTE – If you have been successful in your application, you will then receive a quote from us for the cost of the STA/Respite experience. The quote you are provided is an all-inclusive package. The costs for this package are covered if you have allowance for STA under your NDIS plan.
  • QUOTE APPROVAL & FUNDING REQUEST – Once you have approved the quote, we will request funding approval and request that the approved and nominated funds within your plan are frozen for this STA/Respite experience. If you are Plan Managed, we will seek this approval through your Plan Manager. If you are Self-Managed we will require confirmation from your Support Coordinator or Local Area Coordinator (LAC) that this STA experience is available in your plan and that you have the funding to support the costs of this STA. T&C’s apply
  • FUNDING APPROVAL – Upon approval of funding, we will send you a service agreement to sign.
  • PARTICIPANT TO CONFIRM & SIGN – Once signed we have all the official paperwork which locks in your dates.
  • BOOKING CONFIRMED – We will then confirm your respite experience booking and send you all the relevant information you need to get excited for this adventure!
  • NOTE – Unfortunately, not every applicant will be able to become an immediate participant on our tours. Being a remote island, there are certain limitations that we need to consider. As the respite experience evolves, your application may be suitable in time to come.

Respite is available through your Core Support Funding.

  • The NDIS allows up to 28 days a year of respite.
  • A maximum of 14 days can be taken at one time.
  • Your respite approval will depend on your specific NDIS package and what funding you have available.
  • Your Support Coordinator can assist you in assessing what funding is available to you for respite. Your support coordinator maybe able to assist in re-assessing your goals to include STA in your plan.

Our respite is a package for a 3-night, 4-day all-inclusive experience.

As K’gari is a remote sand island, wheel chair access is very limited. The infrastructure on K’gari is evolving, however many locations are not currently accessible by wheel chair. Please contact our team directly to discuss your mobility requirements.

  • When you book your STA with us everything can be included. (Flights, accommodation, meals, planned activities and support staff). **T&C’s APPLY.
  • The only additional costs you may choose to budget for is the cost of treat from the local shops along with an extra beer or two. Souvenirs can also be purchased to remember your adventure!
  • Yes alcohol is permitted to bring only by participants over the age of 18. No underage drinking will be permitted.
  • Please note that while alcohol is permitted during your respite experience, we only encourage the safe and limited consumption of alcohol during this period. This is for the benefit of yourself, your peers and support workers during your stay.

  • STA respite is designed for you to have a break away from your current supports. We have huge pool of experienced support worker that will assist you in your STA. We will introduce the worker to you prior to your trip so that both you and your support worker are comfortable throughout the stay. 
  • If you are travelling a reasonable distance to participate for STA or Respite then we are able to arrange a quote that will include the travel and accommodation  covered by your NDIS funding.

We would love to welcome your furry friend. You should notify this us regarding this request at the time of making an enquiry so that we can accommodate your request and allocated accommodation that are pet friendly. However, we cannot guarantee that pet friendly accommodation are always available.
